So you're not exactly fresh out of high school, but that shouldn't keep you from getting the degree you've always wanted. Perhaps you decided it's finally time to go on to graduate school, or maybe you'd have a better chance at getting that promotion if you'd had a fourth year of college under your belt. In the state of Georgia, there are several colleges which are especially helpful to those seeking to earn their first degree, add a second degree, or finish up where they left off. 1. Georgia State University. The second largest school in the University System of Georgia after UGA, Georgia State has built up its reputation in the past decade. The school achieved research university status in 1995, reopened the Rialto Center for the Arts in the late 1990s, and added three new set of dorms starting in 2002. However, with a commuter student rate at 88% and its location in the heart of Atlanta, attending Georgia State feels more like going to work than walking through a college quad. Its J. Mack Robinson College of Business is ranked among the best in the nation and provides programs such as the Flexible MBA and Executive MBA for those without the ability or desire to commit to traditional graduate study; similarly, the College of Law includes four- and five-year plans for part-time study towards a law degree. And don't worry about standing out: long regarded as a haven for the nontraditional college experience, students over 25 are a common occurrence on campus. [Full disclosure: The author of this article currently attends Georgia State University.] 2. Kennesaw State University. Kennesaw State is the youngest of the schools listed here, first opening its doors in 1963, but the college easily made up for lost time to become of the best educational values in the state. Known in particular for its nursing and education programs (the latter of which offers two doctorates in Leadership for Learning), Kennesaw State's dance program recent partnered with the Atlanta Ballet for dance education, and its theatre department goes so far as to offer a course in dramaturgy. Starting in fall 2011, commuter students who catch the Town Center Shuttle to school completely waive the $70 monthly parking fee, while those catching the Town Point Shuttle pay $20 instead of the regular $70--a great boon for adults seeking a college with cheap transit. If you're looking for the full residential experience, however, Kennesaw State's housing options all feature apartment-style arrangements as opposed to the more traditional dormitory setup, an important feature for those not prepared to deal with cramped living quarters. 3. Southern Polytechnic State University. Familiarly known as SPSU, Southern Polytechnic is located in Marietta, GA and specializes in technology-oriented programs. The college's dedication to nontraditional students can be evidenced by the Center for Continuing Education, designed to offer certifications and courses to people not necessarily looking for a full-blown degree, and at a student population of 5,500 SPSU can offer class sizes averaging from 25 to 30 students. Actual professors instruct courses instead of teaching assistants or graduate students, and the university is keen on making weekend and evening classes available for working adults going back to school. Surveying and mapping, apparel textile technology, and computer game design and development are just a few of the less common degrees available at the college, which focuses on applicable knowledge relevant to the job market--the perfect environment for adults attending college to expand their skill base. Of course, these are not the only colleges in Georgia that could satisfy someone looking to return to school; technically, any institution with a nontraditional student application is prepared to enroll individuals past typical college age. The schools listed above generally have the resources, classes, and environment more geared towards people who have been out of school for a while, are trying to earn a second degree, or cannot commit to the regular demands of a full-time college experience. However, the best judge of what educational path is right for you is always yourself. So happy hunting--and welcome back to school.
