If you've stayed in a motel or hotel, you've probably found a Bible that said it was provided by the Gideons. But what is a Gideon? Do they really exist? Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as a Gideon. But surprisingly, there isn't any such thing as a Gideon Church or even a Gideon Bible. And the Gideons have been subject to lawsuits and even arrest in America for handing out religious books at public schools. The Gideons International The Gideons International is not a church, but an interdenominational organization of professional and business men who belong to Protestant and evangelical churches. The Gideon organization has about 280,000 members. This includes over 180,000 Gideon members and about 100,000 Auxiliary members who are wives of Gideons. Almost half of the members live in the United States. In the Beginning The Gideons began with three traveling Christian businessmen who met in a Y.M.C.A. in Wisconsin in 1899. These were Samuel E. Hill, president; William J. Knights, vice president; and John H. Nicholson, secretary and treasurer. In 1908, the group still consisted primarily of traveling businessmen who, because of their travels, spent much of their time in hotel rooms. They decided that year that they could witness more effectively if they left a Bible in each hotel. They are named after Gideon, who was the fifth judge or leader of Israel described in the Bible in Judges 6 - 8. The Bible tells how Gideon spoke with an angel, put out a fleece twice to receive signs from God, and lead a small number of men to victory over great odds. Location While the Gideons began in the United States, they distribute Bibles and "Testaments" (typically including the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs, John 3:16 in several languages, and a message of salvation) printed in more than 80 languages in about 190 countries. These are generally distributed by local Gideons. Organization The Gideons have an international board which oversees and sets policy for the organization. Individual camps or chapters elect their own officers. Almost all Gideons, including officers in local camps and on a national level, are volunteers. There are about 10,000 Gideon camps. Beliefs and Practices According to their Articles of Incorporation, Gideons are "business and professional men, except clergymen, who believe in the Bible as the inspired Word of God, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God, have received Him as their personal Saviour, endeavor to follow Him in their daily life, and who are members in good standing of an evangelical or Protestant church, congregation or assembly." While the Gideons make presentations for churches and other groups and pray at their own meetings, they do not as a group perform religious ceremonies. Instead, members are expected to be active in their individual churches. A Gideon usually gives out scriptures in his local area as this cuts down on expenses and also means the Gideon will be familiar with local customs and laws. It also enables Gideons to witness in some parts of the world that restrict or forbid traditional Christian missionaries. They distribute Bibles or Testaments in motels and hotels, jails and prisons, hospitals and medical offices. They also give scriptures individually to students, emergency and military personnel, and anyone a Gideon witnesses to individually. Since 1908, they have distributed over 1.5 billion Bibles and Testaments. Controversy The group is not without controversy, usually because members distribute books in public schools. Some people and groups claim this violates the concept of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Groups such as the ACLU and The Gideons have had several conflicts over whether or not a group has the right to bring religious texts into public schools. Two Gideon men were arrested in Florida after handing out Bibles or Testaments. Sources disagreed as to whether the men were distributing religious literature to children on the public sidewalk or on school grounds. The charges were later dismissed. There has also been some controversy over the model of Gideon himself. According to the Bible, he conducted animal sacrifice, was responsible for the deaths of many people, was a polygamist, and had sexual relations and a child with a concubine, a woman with whom he was cohabiting but not married. The Gideon Bible Technically, there is no such thing as a "Gideon Bible," but Bibles in different translations provided by The Gideons. The group recognizes the Holy Bible including the New and Old Testament. They do not accept some books included in Roman Catholic and other Bibles, including the original 1611 King James Version (Authorized Version).
