Vocational schools are a great way to find your career path before you leave high school and it can be one of the best decisions you have ever made. When I was in my junior year of high school I was part of the Allied Health program at my local vocational school, which was a more college focused medical class. I had decided early on in my life that I wanted to be in the medical field so it was only natural for me to be interested in this half-day program my junior and senior year. Here are three benefits that come with enrolling in an Allied Health program at your local vocational school if you want to be in the medical profession, which is based on my own personal experience. 1. One huge benefit of taking an Allied Health class at your local vocational school is that you will have general healthcare knowledge such as medical terminology. Medical terminology is one class you will have to take in college if you want to go into the medical field, so it is something you will have to memorize at some point in your future. Allied Health gave me the opportunity to learn all of the basic terminology in the medical profession and what they mean in relation to different procedures. My stepmother actually went to college later in her life undertaking the surgical technician profession and she had the same medical terminology books that I had while I was in the Allied Health class. It really goes beyond medical terminology because you will also gain knowledge of what different rules and regulations are in various healthcare settings and what the basic fundamentals are of being a great healthcare professional. 2. You will also likely have the ability to earn certifications in different healthcare fields that you could use immediately to land a job while still in high school. While I was in the Allied Health class I was able to earn a certification in nurse assisting my junior year and earn certification as a personal care aide during my senior year. These certifications might not be useful to everyone however because typically people in your class will be on different career paths where direct patient care is not something they wish to pursue. I was one of the few people in my class that did not want to take these courses although they were required because I did not want to become a nurse or be involved in direct patient care. Although I did not like earning these certifications, they do prove to be beneficial because if you cannot find a job or need to find a job then you have these certifications to fall back on and can make it work for the time being. These certifications are also nice because they will transfer to hospitals and other healthcare facilities you want to work in but sometimes the hospital might require further testing or certification before you are hired. Earning these certifications are basically just another option for you as a career choice or they can just be placed in your resume as another skill you have to offer. 3. Being involved in the Allied Health class will also allow you the opportunity to decide whether or not healthcare is really a career industry you want to be a part of. A lot of people might like the idea of healthcare and being involved in it such as becoming a nurse, but not everyone is cut out for the work. Getting involved in the program will allow you to see what healthcare jobs entail as well as the many years of college you will have to go through in order to get there. It is also great because some people will spend thousands of dollars in college on a healthcare degree and then figure out that it is just not what they thought it would be and they end up wasting that money which could have been used on something they enjoy doing. You also will need to find out whether or not needles, blood, trauma or other medical situations bother you before you get into the medical field and this is the perfect time to do just that. Healthcare is not all it is cracked up to be and a lot of high school students do not realize everything that goes into the profession whether it is time, studying, money, schooling or just the type of person needed for the work. You will thank yourself later if you go through an Allied Health program and find out that healthcare is something you do not wish to pursue because you will save yourself money and a lot of hassle in college. As you can tell there are a lot of benefits to go through an Allied Health vocational program while you are high school. These are just some of the most important benefits of this program while you are a junior and senior in high school that you should consider before you make your decision. I have found out that although I do not work in healthcare at the moment, that time I spent learning while in high school will always be with me and they are skills I can fall back on whenever the urge hits me.
